In this session, Shannon will show teachers the Why and How (backwards design) of Proficiency based assessment using task-neutral Proficiency sequences. Teachers will learn that designing these sequences meets all of their needs in one sequence (lesson planning, self-assessment, proficiency scales) instead of get caught in a death by rubric spiral.

Shannon Schinkel has been a Theatre and Humanities educator for 23 years. For the last 15 years, she has been exploring all aspects of assessment, especially with respect to going gradeless and standards-based grading. In 2019, she started blogging about her experiences (https://mygrowthmindset.home.blog/) and founded Beyond Report Cards on Facebook. In the spring of 2020, she co-founded the Assessment Consortium of British Columbia (www.acbced.ca). She is currently supporting teachers with diverse classes by helping them develop proficiency sequences.
